Dixie: At the Shelter Adult Female in Rustburg, Virginia

My story
You can fill out an adoption application online on our official website.Update 4/29/23 Miss Dixie looks amazing now. Her coat is black, sleek and shiny.  She is the best all around girl. She loves everyone. This girl loves toys, she picks a new one out the toy box everyday. She loves kids too, and is the smartest girl. She is looking for a home where she will have love, attention and a nice soft bed inside to relax on. She enjoys playing fetch, squeaking balls and getting loving.

This is Dixie. At seven years old, she was rescued from a home where it appears she was used as a breeding machine. She was defeated physically when she was taken in, but was gentle and easy to handle, according to the vet staff. Much as we want to feed her alot, when dogs come in emaciated and starved, they must be given a refeeding protocol that limits their food intake to small amounts several times a day. Although Dixie responded well to that, she spiked a fever off and on for several days, and was touch and go as well. It appears she is finally on the mend, and will soon be ready to leave the vet office and head to the shelter. We don’t know if she is good with other dogs, but we feel she would do best in a quiet home with no other company to begin with. Three of Dixie’s puppies are also in our care. Sadly, one of them broke with parvovirus last night, and we are concerned for the welfare of all three.

She is sweet even tho she was neglected and used for breeding. She is friendly to everyone.
